Bringing LOL Indonesia: Yang Ketawa Kalah to Life, My Journey as Showrunner
When Amazon Prime Video approached me to helm LOL Indonesia: Yang Ketawa Kalah, I knew this was more than just another production gig. It was a chance to bring one of the world's most beloved comedy formats to the country I've spent my entire career entertaining and to do it at a global standard.
The Call That Changed Everything
The LOL: Last One Laughing franchise had already conquered over 20 countries from Japan (where it originated as Documental) to Italy, Germany, Mexico, Australia, and beyond. It's one of the most-watched original series in Prime Video's history across multiple territories. So when Amazon MGM Studios selected Indonesia as one of three Southeast Asian nations to receive its own version alongside the Philippines and Thailand, the stakes were immense. They needed a showrunner who understood both the craft of large-scale production and the soul of Indonesian comedy. I was honored to be appointed for the role.
The Concept: Simple Rules, Infinite Chaos
The premise is deceptively straightforward. Lock ten of Indonesia's funniest comedians in one room for six hours. Their mission: make each other laugh. Their survival rule: don't laugh yourself. Every smile, every crack, every suppressed giggle is caught by 32 hidden cameras. One by one, the comedians who break are eliminated. The last one standing claims the trophy, 300 million rupiah, and the ultimate title Penguasa Galaksi Komedi (Ruler of the Comedy Galaxy).
What makes this format electric is what happens between the rules. There's no script, no rehearsal, no safety net. Just raw comedic instinct colliding in real time.
Assembling the Dream Cast
Casting was one of the most critical and most enjoyable, parts of the process. We deliberately curated a roster that spans generations, genres, and styles of comedy. The ten "Lords" who entered the arena were Cak Lontong, Andre Taulany, Denny Cagur, Rina Nose, Indra Jegel, Gilang Dirga, Ivan Gunawan, Asri Welas, Marshel Widianto, and Dicky Difie. From veteran improvisers to stand-up firebrands, each brought a completely different weapon to the comedy battlefield.
Commanding the chaos from the control room was Pandji Pragiwaksono, who served as the show's host or as we call the role, the Commander. Pandji's sharp wit and authority made him the perfect referee for this beautiful madness.
Production at a Global Standard
Working alongside Amazon MGM Studios and our production partner BASE Entertainment, we built the show with the same production values you'd expect from any major international LOL edition. Director Alcy Desrandy and our crew designed a set rigged with 32 hidden cameras capturing every angle, every whispered joke, every desperate poker face, every spectacular breakdown. The result was six episodes of pure, unfiltered comedic warfare that premiered on Prime Video on July 11, 2024, with two episodes dropping at launch and new episodes released weekly.
Why This Matters for Indonesian Entertainment
Throughout my career, from launching Indonesian Idol and Stand Up Comedy Indonesia to producing the SEA Games 2011 Opening Ceremony, I've always believed that Indonesian talent deserves a world-class stage. LOL Indonesia: Yang Ketawa Kalah proves that our comedians don't just compete at the global level, they thrive. Watching international audiences discover the brilliance of Cak Lontong's deadpan timing or Rina Nose's fearless physicality has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life.
This isn't just a comedy show. It's Indonesia's comedic heritage, packaged for the world, delivered without subtlety and without apology. And this is only the beginning.
LOL Indonesia: Yang Ketawa Kalah is streaming exclusively on Prime Video worldwide
